A couple of days ago on the Mind Recipe’s face book page, I posted a video of a gentleman who gave his honest and often confronting view about his life, and his contribution to the world. Nick Vuijicic is an amazing man who has a “Never Give Up in Life” philosophy, and I couldn’t help but become overwhelmed with emotion as I watched his story.
We all have stories of overcoming hardships in our lives to some degree – Nick’s hardship was he was born without arms and legs, and his parents were told that he would never be able to stand upright, let alone be able to do anything else for himself.
After viewing this segment, I asked the question “How did it change your perspective on your own life?” I was a little surprised with the reaction – many people felt sorry for Nick, some were overcome with emotion, and many more were thankful that in their own lives, a similar circumstance wasn’t unfolding.
Nick Vuijicic has enormous difficulties to overcome on a daily basis, but how many of us can have that affect on people that Nick does? How many of us are hugged with admiration by complete strangers? How many of us have the opportunity to really change people’s outlooks on their own difficulties? How many of us, despite our circumstances, look at what can be done, rather than what can’t be?
Zig Zigler is quoted as saying “Others can stop you temporarily – you are the only one who can do it permanently”. I am sure that during Nick’s life, there were things and people who stopped him, but from what I have seen and heard, this was only temporary. There may have been times of desperation and self-pity, but his attitude of Never Giving Up In Life has elevated him to the inspirational man having admiration and love sent his way from around the world.
Who amongst us would call that a disability?
Hi Brenda,
A great inspiration for a Monday morning. I love that quote from Zig Z! You never really know how mentally tough you really are until you’re faced with a huge disappointment. That’s really when we get to know who we really are as well as others.
Janette
Thanks Janette. It is truly amazing what we can go through when really tested. That’s why I am in so much in awe with Nick and the accomplishments he has made with his life.
Temporary setbacks are just that – unless we decide otherwise.
Love Zig Zigler’s quote. It is so true.
One of his best, and I think we all need to be reminded of this thought occasionally.
I nearly gave up so many times in my life…and then I realised it wasn’t just me that I was hurting, but people I loved and loved me. Shook me a bit to take action, which I did. Proud to say – nothing will stand in my way anymore
I will never give up again…thank you
